Fabienne Verdier paints with enormous, self-constructed brushes which are secured to the ceiling and suspended over her horizontally-laid canvas: a technique developed after her deep engagement with Chinese painting practices. In this magnificent piece, the milky porcelain finish on the surface of the painting, achieved by countless layers of acrylic wash, intensifies the heaviness of the black painted motif. Here, Verdier draws on references as diverse as the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, the improvised abstraction of Wassily Kandinsky, and the sonoral landscapes of John Cage, allowing for a tension between figurative and abstract interpretations of the work.
