Chu Teh-Chun in Venice

The most important exhibition devoted to Chu Teh-Chun (1920–2014) in recent years will take place at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice from 20 April in conjunction with the 2024 Venice Biennale.

Chu Teh-Chun: Nebula boasts exceptional loans, including from the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, presenting 50 emblematic paintings mostly produced from 1955 onwards, the year Chu settled permanently in Paris amongst the Western avant-garde. The presentation unfolds in a reverse chronological order, from late large-format paintings to his earliest small works, displayed over three levels of the Fondazione Cini building.

Born in China, he was trained in both Eastern and Western classical traditions. Following his move to Europe, Chu abandoned figurative painting and eventually became the first Chinese person to be inducted in the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Today he is renowned for his abstract oil paintings of imagined and dramatic landscapes.

A new monograph on the artist by art historian Matthieu Poirier, curator of the exhibition, is being published by Gallimard and will be available to purchase from April 2024.
