Bozar Brussels celebrates 100 years since the birth of Antoni Tàpies with a major retrospective

Coinciding with the centenary of Antoni Tàpies' birth, Bozar - Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels has opened a major retrospective of his career spanning 1944 to the 1990s. Antoni Tàpies: The Practice of Art is the first major exhibition in Belgium to showcase a complete view of the artist and the most important Tàpies retrospective in almost 20 years.

A self-taught artist during the interwar period, Tàpies reflected on the human condition, his historical situation and the artistic practice, especially the limits and contradictions of painting. He received a number of awards in his lifetime, including the Peace Prize from the United Nations Association in Spain (1984), the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Government (1988), and the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (1993). He was made honorary member of the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1998). In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Lissone award for his life’s work.
