Artwork Focus: Pierre Knop's ‘Untitled,' 2026

Drawing on personal archives, photographs and fragments of art history, Pierre Knop transmutes these small images into vast, vibrant panoramas. Here, a solitary figure stands against a great canopy of foliage, the garden at once sublime and quietly unsettling. In Knop’s work, architecture, nature and the human form converge in compositions that draw the viewer into a playful and ambiguous journey.

Rooted in the European tradition of landscape painting, Knop’s work is in dialogue with figures such as Nicolas Poussin and Caspar David Friedrich, as well as Pierre Bonnard, whose work is also on view in this exhibition. This pairing invites a conversation between the Nabi’s vision of colour and interiority and its living resonance today.

Pierre Knop lives and works in Cologne.
