Biography
For the 2026 edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, Waddington Custot presents a focused dialogue between two leading figures of the School of Paris, Zao Wou-Ki (1920–2013) and Chu Teh-Chun (1920–2014), alongside one of Britain’s most significant sculptors, Barry Flanagan (1941–2009). Zao Wou-Ki forged a language of abstraction that sought to capture the elemental forces of nature, bridging Chinese calligraphic tradition and the expressive freedoms of post-war Paris and New York. Similarly shaped by early training in calligraphy and classical poetry, Chu Teh-Chun developed luminous, imagined landscapes. The presentation is further animated with Barry Flanagan’s dynamic sculptures of hares and other animals, which introduce a playful yet philosophical dimension.
